Feeling All Worldly w/ Man About World

The popular gay travel blog Man About World recently showed us a little love, pointing out that YDKML is the perfect game to take along for group getaways...which we totally agree with because we've done it a bunch! Here's an excerpt from their lovely write-up:

"Try a game night next time you have a group getaway coming up–say P-Town, Palm Springs or Puerto Vallarta. Actually connect with your friends instead of just over-imbibing on everything and everyone being on their phones? Take along You Don’t Know My Life! a new party game co-created by ManABoutWorld contributor Dennis Hensley and game designer Jeb Havens.

"Not only do you learn things about your longtime friends you never knew—“You spilled wine on Madonna? Really?”—but if you’re playing with people you’ve just met, you’ll feel like friends by the end. Travel-themed questions like: “When was a time you felt like you were in paradise?” “What’s something you’re really glad you have a photo of yourself in front of?” or “Vegas story. Go.” add to the good vacation vibes. And because the game box is about the size of a hardback novel, it packs easy, too."

The Greatest Showpeople

We're big fans of The Greatest Showman so imagine our delight when we learned that Keala Settle was a fan of YDKML! She was introduced to it by our friend actor Jack Plotnick who, funnily enough, was at one of our very first playtests where recalled an enchanting dance he made up as a teenager to Stacey Q's "Two of Hearts").

Jack's longtime friend Seth Rudetsky was in L.A. and loves games so they got some friends together and dived in.

Seth is Mr. Broadway, having appeared in shows like The Rink and Disaster, which he and Jack created together. Seth also hosts a Broadway show on Sirius XM radio. He's tapped in to the Great White Way big-time and is friends with Keala.

They all had a blast playing the game and sent us the above sassy photo of Keala giving her best YDKML face.

Seth also wrote up the game in his Playbill column. Here's what he had to say:

While I was in L.A., I had a game night at my hotel with Paul Vogt and his husband, Dimitri, who runs the Garry Marshall Theatre, Keala Settle and her young friend, Piper, and Jack Plotnick, and his friend, Jim Hansen. We all played a fabulous new game called “You Don’t Know My Life.” OMG. So fun. It’ll ask a question like “What concert/event did you sneak into?” or “What is something you regret from when you were a child?” and then everyone anonymously writes down an answer. The winner figures out who wrote what answer. If, however, you get it wrong, the person has to say “You don’t know my life!”

It’s so fun because you find out hilarious stories from people’s pasts! When I heard that one of the players was afraid of going to the bathroom in the basement at his summer day camp, so
every day he would pee in the staircase (!), I knew it had to be Jack. When I guessed, Jack had to say “You do know my life!” So fun!!!

Thanks Seth and Jack and Keala and friends for embracing the game. There truly are no people like show people.

Hometown Glory isn't just an Adele song

Over the holidays, I visited my hometown of Holbrook, AZ and dropped a copy of the game off at the local newspaper The Tribune and they ended up assigning the writer Toni Gibbons to do an article about the game. I grew up next door to the publisher Matthew Barger and went to high school with his wife Debbie Reed Barger so being in the Tribune felt like a real full-circle moment. And I relish any opportunity to tell the story about the time the power went out in the Roxy Theater during a showing of Xanadu and mayhem ensued. - DH

Holy Hilarity, Batman! A Night at DC

It was better than a superhero double feature. Earlier this month, Jeb and I had the opportunity to facilitate an employee game night at DC Comics office in Burbank, CA. The players were a lot of fun, the Girl Scout cookies tasty as ever and the prizes the procured for the event included a Batman cookie jar, a Superman backpack and various Wonder Woman swag. Afterwards, we got a little mini-tour of the office...complete with a swing by the headquarters of Mad Magazine, which I was obsessed with growing up. I think it's where I got my sense of humor from.

Here's a few fun pics from the night. Thanks to Doug Prinzivalli for putting it all together. Your move, Marvel. - DH

2 New Rule Variations: Favorite Hashtag & I'll Take One In Every Color

It's been so exciting to hear about people playing the game all over the country. The shot above is of party hostess Jenn and her friends in North Carolina...who are apparently all thieves who didn't go to prom.

Also, we came upon two new RULE VARIATIONS that you might enjoy:

1) FAVORITE HASHTAG
If you really get into the hashtag step, you might like this. Here's how it works: After the answers have been read and the hashtags are all on the table but BEFORE the guessing starts, the person who asked the question names the favorite hashtag of the round--based on the group's reactions and also their own opinion. The player who wrote the favorite hashtag gets the question card to add to their pile as a point. Can they choose their own hashtag? Yes, if the group seems to be leaning that way. Note: to insure fairness, make sure all players get the same amount of chances to be the asker.

2) ONE IN EVERY COLOR
You might have noticed that when you opened the game, the questions were divided by color. We heard from some players that they kept them separate to play instead of shuffling them together. It gave us this idea: During set-up, place the questions in three separate decks by color. When it's a players turn, they takes one card from each deck and chooses one question from the three to pose to the group. Will it be a relatively tame BLUE ICEBREAKER or an edgy, provocative PINK SWEATBREAKER or somewhere in middle with a GREEN FRIENDMAKER?

Give 'em a whirl next time you play and let us know what you think!

Life is Bey-utiful when Beyonce Digs Your Moves

On Christmas Eve, I showed up at my friends Ben and Ian's get-together to find a game of YDKML already in progress. The question they were discussing is "What was your best random celebrity sighting?" and their friend Matthew Bunker was in the middle of a mind-blowing story about an encounter he had with a mega-star just a week or so ago. The story was so great that I asked Matthew if he'd share it on video. He said yes because well, when something that amazing happens to you, you want the whole wide world to know. - DH

Hello 2019! A Look Back at Game Day

Happy New Year and welcome to our blog!

We figured January 1st was the perfect day to launch a blog about all things YOU DON'T KNOW MY LIFE!  We'll do our darndest to keep it up to date and share fun, interesting content. Or pictures of my dog Enzo, which always get likes on Facebook.

We got the games in our hot little hands exactly two weeks ago so we thought a fun first post would be a look back at that day; December 19, 2018, the day we now affectionately call Game Day because it sounds like a sports thing but it isn't.

Since we'd promised our backers we were going to Save Christmas, we were more than a little anxious for the shipment to arrive from China. Also Jeb was flying back east that night for the holidays so the games arrived in the nick of time.

Oh and we also had a very important auction to win as you will see in the video. - DH
